The First ScotGEM Society Conference!

On Saturday 26th April 2025, ScotGEM students and staff gathered at Ninewells Hospital in NHS Tayside for the first ScotGEM Society conference on the theme of “Agents of Change”. Months of planning came together for a great day. As Treasurer of the Society, I had secured funding for the event from MDU, the National Centre for Remote and Rural Health and Care and the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland. We were incredibly grateful for this. It allowed us to gather ScotGEM students and welcome speakers from across Scotland.

We were lucky enough to hear talks from four amazing speakers:

Prof Rod Mountain – Former ENT surgeon, passionate about creativity, co-design & nature in health.
Dr David Hogg – Rural GP, mentor, previous director of BASICS.
Dr Ken Donaldson – Medical Director & bereavement care leader, advocate for coaching-led healthcare.
Dr Rebecca Lawrence – Consultant Psychiatrist, writer, and advocate for doctors’ mental health. List item
Our final talk of the day from Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Rebecca Lawrence.

Each of the four talks led on to some very interesting discussions, which were continued over a great lunch! I think the jammie dodger traybake was the star of the show.

The day also included a poster competition, kindly judged by ScotGEM teaching staff. Congratulations to second year student Sonja Collaku for winning best poster!

This event also signaled the end of an era for the current committee, with the results of our AGM being announced at the end of the conference. Congratulations to Joshua Cleaver, the new president! Good luck to all the new committee!

It’s been great to be Treasurer for the ScotGEM Society this year and I’ve enjoyed helping to organise events, including this conference. I’m sure the new committee will continue to find new ways to bring ScotGEM students together!

Olivia is a final year ScotGEM student who will begin working as a FY1 doctor in NHS Tayside later this year.
